Switzerland sends humanitarian aid equipment to Libya

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has sent in consultation with the Egyptian and Tunisian authorities, a team of humanitarian aid to the border with Egypt and Tunisia to Libya. It must, among other things clarify local needs and to take initial emergency measures.

Many people who have fled the unrest and violence in Libya, arriving exhausted in Egypt or Tunisia and support. Swiss wants to contribute to the mitigation of suffering.

The weekend to reach two Rapid Response Team (SET), Egypt and Tunisia. They consist of four, respectively, two members of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) and used at the borders with Libya. Its mission is to eliminate local needs, initiate, in cooperation with the authorities and partner organizations, some of the emergency measures and to examine the channels of transmission and distribution structures of humanitarian relief supplies.

The humanitarian situation in Libya and in border regions is precarious as a whole, but at present it remains difficult to estimate. In addition to the SET, the DFA has sent to each SCS specialists to strengthen the Swiss embassies in Tunis and Cairo. They should report on humanitarian needs, clarify possible clues to the humanitarian cooperation with partner organizations and ensure coordination with other donors.

The DFA has decided beyond the ICRC's activities in the field of emergency medical assistance throughout the event in Libya, with a contribution of 500,000 Swiss francs to help. Clarification on the financing of humanitarian aid from other partners of the multilateral aid operations are ongoing.
